The Summer term at St James has an Art focus, and we have been practicing our drawing skills in our sketchbooks. We have begun by learning about Frida Kahlo, and have so far practiced sketching facial features and also drawing our favourite things. These skills will help us to create our final piece, which will be a self portrait.

To begin the Summer term, we have been learning all about plants in Science. We have planted our own beans, and this week we went on a hunt for wild flowers, which we carefully sketched back in class.

We enjoyed celebrating Eid this week, and we were lucky to have a member of our class tell us all about the celebration, and how his family celebrate it.

In RE we are learning about Holy week in Christianity. We worked together to create artwork to represent a different day of the week and what happened.

World Book day

Today was world book day. We celebrated by exploring lots of different types of books and listening to lots of stories. Here we are in our costumes. Can you guess who we are?

We are so proud of Alfred, who raised an amazing £221, by reading 40 books in our sponsored readathon! Well done Alfred!

Our current story is ‘We’re going on a lion hunt’.

Here we are creating actions to the story, to help us learn it off by heart!

Chinese New Year

We enjoyed celebrating the Lunar New Year together in school. In Orange class we learnt all about the animals that are related to each year. We played games and danced a dragon dance! We made a Chinese fan and a dragon puppet.

Here we are carefully painting Chinese numbers!

We have started our new topic ‘From A to B’, and will be learning about our world. We started by looking at our local environment, and we went for a walk. We saw different types of birds and plants, and a flooded lake!

As we prepare for Christmas, we’ve enjoyed singing ‘It was on a starry night’ at St James’ church during our carol service. We have also made Christingles and learnt all about what they represent!

Phonics is so important in Year One. We practice twice a day and this helps us to be amazing readers!

It is vital that we learn all our sounds from phase 3 and phase 5.

Each sound has a rhyme to help us to remember it. Below you can watch videos of each sound. Please watch with your children and practice!

In Science we have been learning all about animals. This week we were lucky enough to have some animal visitors! We were able to hold animals and learn about them, including reptiles, mammals, and insects!

We had so much fun watching ‘Sleeping Beauty’ at The Mercury Theatre this week!

This term in Year One, our History theme is ‘Time travellers’

We are exploring The Great Fire of London, learning about timelines and making comparisons between life now and life in 1666.

We’ve used feathered pencils to write diaries like Samuel Pepys. created Tudor houses, and role played each part of a timeline!

Orange class have really been flying with their writing this term! We have just enjoyed writing the beginnings of our own versions of ‘The Three Little Pigs’, ‘Goldilocks and The Three Bears’ and are now moving on to learning the story of ‘The Gingerbread Man’. We are perfecting our sentence writing, and our handwriting. We expect to write some more fantastic stories over the coming weeks! We have used story maps and actions to help us remember the stories!

We are learning to be mathematicians this year, working hard on our numbers to ten. We have looked at addition and are now moving on to subtraction. We know how to use manipulatives to help us.

Reading is something that we do a lot! As well as practicing our phonics, and exploring different texts in Reading for Meaning, we love to read independently or with friends for pleasure too!

We have enjoyed beginning to learn about Christianity, and have focused on Creation, finding out what Christians believe about how God created the Earth. We are now comparing this to the Creation story in Islam, and finding similarities and differences.

Here we are enjoying our school Diwali celebrations.

During the Autumn term so far, we have learnt all about materials in Science. We have now begun to learn about animals and how we can categorise them. We are looking forward to a visit from some real animals later in the term! Watch this space!
